Across Latin America battles continue to be waged between reactionary and progressive forces. The recent past has shown the strength of imperialism and weaknesses on the left. Despite some defeats the fight goes on, especially to defend Venezuela against concerted opposition from within and externally from the USA.

Despite the challenges of being a small island with few natural resources, the US blockade and the collapse of support from the former socialist countries, Cuba has preserved the gains of the Revolution. It provides free universal healthcare, lifelong education and opportunities for all.

OXFAM's failure to deal properly with the scandal of sexual misconduct by it's staff in Haiti and the fallout expose other problems with the politics of aid and how it currently operates. The British government has a clearly stated agenda of making aid work more in it's interests, whilst recipients of aid, including in Haiti, are calling for greater accountability to their governments.

We live in a very dangerous world dominated by neo-liberalism which fuels inequality, conflict and a drive to war. As well as making the lives of millions miserable there are growing tensions between rival imperial and aspiring imperial powers. Nearly 30 years since the end of the Soviet Union what kind of world is capitalism creating and how is being re-shaped? Despite its dominance, however, neo-liberalism has not won people to support its system. Forces from the left, the extreme right, religions and nationalists are gaining ground.

The picture across Latin America is now very different from the leftward surge of a few years ago. Progressive advances are being rolled back or are under threat from neoliberal forces internally and imperialist forces externally. Despite that there is strong resistance. Venezuela is at the centre of US attempts to reassert its dominance in the region. There are still positive developments as well and everything to fight for.
